Absolutely -
I've tried a bunch of scenarios, closing browser, starting back up..
Even go to www.resizebrowser.com click 1280 X 960, opens a new FireFox browser window (not tab) and test
www.west-wind.com/wwthreads. It comes up non-frames... (still every now and then 9 of 10, I get frames)
CT

You sure your size is not under 769px?
What browser are you using?

I don't see any of this unless I'm under around 800px.

Rick,
Yes, I am going to http://west-wind.com/wwThreads/ and clicking "enter site".
It is acting sporadic now. Sometimes I get
http://west-wind.com/wwThreads/ShowMessages.wwt and sometimes I get http://west-wind.com/wwThreads/default_frames.asp
9 times out of 10, no frames...

Craig,

Are you sure you're hitting:

ttp://west-wind.com/wwThreads/

Not:

http://west-wind.com/wwThreads/default_frames.asp

It still will not let me go into frame mode. I have verified everything, even in FireFox and IE.
I have three large screens - even checked through http://www.resizebrowser.com/
Let me know if there is anything else to try. Also, maybe a button could be added to turn frames on/off.
Thanks, Craig

The check is done when you start the message board. So resize your browser to a size greater than 768 and then hit:

http://west-wind.com/wwThreads/

That should get you frames. If you start with a smaller view it'll start in non-frames mode and not jump out of it.

Hi Rick,
The 768 check does not seem to be working on my desktop with three large monitors. I am getting non-frames on 1280 x 1024 screens and it is hardly bearable.
Please restore the frames.
Thanks, Craig

Hi all,

You might have noticed that the message board design has changed slightly (or a lot depending how you're accessing it) today. I've updated the message board to work better with mobile form factors. You should now be able to get a much better experience if you access the message board via your phone or tablet.

Basically any size under 768 pixels gets a non-frames version of the message board that is slimmed down and optimized for smaller screens. Anything over 768 gets frames view which pretty much works the same as it did before. Basically this means, phones in either portrait or landscape and tablets in portrait mode get the non-frames version. Tablets in portrait and desktop (depending on your window width when the main page is accessed) will run in Frames.

The site use some browser width sniffing on startup and media queries to make this happen.

This was no easy feat given the ancient code base of this message board and the hideous styling and CSS organization (some of which was cleaned up a bit but not completely during the recent styling update) and it's not perfect.

Frames of course are evil, but this message board has been using them since the beginning and I find that they simply are the easiest way to read messages in a message board. Unfortunately frames are horrid for touch devices because frame content doesn't scroll. Even if you have scrolling content inside of a frame it won't scroll so the only way to reach the bottom of the longer frame is to scroll all frames. Yechh...

So this update basically removes the frames for smaller screens and then adds buttons to the windows to replace the top screen navigation. It also dynamically removes all the frame targets as needed to shoot all content into the current window. Everything is running off a single set of pages and styles - there is some script logic that checks for frames and media queries to conditionally add styling.

I've built a few mobile sites in the last couple of years, but luckily haven't had to retrofit an existing site before... this experience was way mroe complex than setting up new sites. Trying to squeeze desktop sized content into mobile form factor is painful to say the list. Going forward it's definitely better to design 'mobile first' and scale up from the there rather than the other way around. Knew that going in, but I didn't want to start from scratch here... the end result is passable...

IAC, try out with your mobile device and let me know what you think... and let me know if anything fails. I'm sure there will be a few issues over the next days.

Aloha,

+++ Rick ---
